Driving With No Insurance

Driving with no insurance is a serious offence.

The Automatic Number Plate Recognition System (A.N.P.R), operated by the police will tell them immediately if your car is uninsured and they have the power to seize your vehicle there and then.

The Police can offer a fixed penalty of 6 penalty points and a £200 fine. If the matter proceeds by summons the Court will consider imposing 6-8 penalty points for first offences. However, it can also order a disqualification up to 12 months for the most serious offences.

A financial penalty will always be imposed, with the amount dependent on a defendant’s means and the circumstances of offence, but the maximum fine can be £5000. It will be regarded as a matter of fact, i.e. whether there was insurance in place or not.
