Nick Freeman says motorists could risk being over the drink-drive
limit if they use mouthwash containing alcohol, as
"it can artificially inflate
a reading, raising the risk of failing a
breathalyser."
One of the best selling brands, Listerine, contains 21.6 - 26.9%
alcohol. Mr Freeman carried out his own test,
sober, after gargling with alcohol based mouthwash and
said:
"It produced a reading over
the prescribed limit."
Following police guidelines, drivers should be asked
if they have used mouthwash in the last 20 minutes and a
police spokeman said:
"The small amount of alcohol
in some mouthwashes does not reach the bloodstream and
evaporates in seconds - making it undetectable by the time
a breath test is carried out."
