Continuous Insurance Enforcement Law

The law has changed relating to insuring vehicles. From today all vehicles have to be insured whether they are driven or not, unless the vehicle has been declared off the road and has a valid SORN (statutory off road notification).

By tightening the laws relating to car insurance the government hopes to reduce the number of uninsured drivers.

Working with the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) the DVLA will write to drivers informing them that their vehicle is uninsured and that they will be fined if they do not insure the vehicle.  The initial fine will be £100, however if the vehicle remains uninsured the vehicle could be clamped, impounded or destroyed and the registered keeper could face a court prosecution with a £1000 maximum fine.
