Court dismisses MEP speeding case

A Tory MEP avoided a driving ban today after he was found not guilty of a speeding offence following an intervention from the lawyer known as "Mr Loophole".

Timothy Kirkhope, 62, who is also a former Westminster MP, was due to stand trial at Sheffield Magistrates' Court this afternoon after he denied driving at 35mph in a 30mph limit in the city.

Speaking after the brief hearing, Mr Freeman, from Knutsford, said: "Mr Kirkhope is extremely relieved that this ordeal is behind him.

"He travels extensively in his car serving his area and any period of disqualification would have severely impacted on his ability to provide the quality of service that the area has become accustomed to."

It is understood that Mr Kirkhope, who lives in Scotton, near Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, already had nine points on his licence and, if he had been convicted of speeding, he could have been banned from driving for six months.

His Mercedes car was clocked at 35mph on Burngreave Road in Sheffield on 2 February.
